THE HEARTLAND BIKEWAYS
OF MADISON COUNTY |
In expanding their transportation function, MCCOG develops long range plans to increase bicycling as a means of transportation. The current bicycle and pedestrian plan was developed and adopted by all the communities in Madison County in 2005.
The plan was developed through extensive community input and coordination with Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), the central Indiana region, transit groups, special interest groups, and local elected officials. The development of a regional bicycle network is supported by federal and state transportation policy goals.
The goal of the plan is to improve and expand opportunities to bicycle and walk as a means of transportation and recreation while enhancing the quality of life within Madison County. A series of on-road bikeways, called the Heartland Bikeways of Madison County, were the direct result of implementing proposed routes identified in the plan.
